In case you’ve missed the buzz, Taylor ‘Chip’ Hanson, a swim instructor at Wollondilly Leisure Centre, has been making national headlines!

Earlier this year, Chip proudly achieved his long-held aspiration of becoming a fully qualified Teacher of Swimming & Water Safety. His inspiring journey recently caught the attention of The Sunday Telegraph, where he also raised awareness about the exclusion of athletes with Down syndrome from the Paralympics.

That’s right – Chip lives with Down syndrome and through sheer hard work, an ambition to become an accredited swim teacher and outstanding support from colleagues, has now emerged to help others learn to swim and be safer around water.

Last week, Chip added another accolade to his name, winning Swim Teacher of the Year at the 2024 ARI Awards and making history as the first person living with Down Syndrome to receive this award. A well-deserved recognition for his dedication and passion, Chip’s award acceptance prompted a standing ovation and left no one with dry eyes.

But that’s not all, Chip has also forged a connection in the pool with three-year-old Jagger Lemmon, who has started his learning to swim journey under Chip’s guidance. Together, they’re enjoying Monday afternoons helping Jagger learn to swim and creating a special bond in the pool.

Inspired by Chip’s journey, Jagger’s mum Ashleigh wanted Jagger to learn to swim from someone who truly understands the challenges and triumphs that come with Down Syndrome.

“The way Jagger looks at Chip, and the way Chip looks at Jagger, it’s just so special,” Ashleigh said. “It’s a connection that’s hard to describe, but you can see they are drawn to each other. I can’t believe how comfortable Jagger is with Chip, and honestly, I can’t stop smiling.”

We look forward to witnessing Chip’s continued growth and success, his enthusiasm, talent and commitment to inclusion make a difference in the lives of his students, like Jagger, reminding us of the importance of opportunity for everyone.
